RV Pad Thickness & Reinforcement: What You Actually Need

How thick an RV pad should be in Prescott, AZ — plus reinforcement, base, and drainage specs for Class A, Class C, and travel trailer parking.

A residential driveway is spec'd for 4,000-pound vehicles. A Class A motorhome fully loaded can weigh 30,000 pounds. Pouring an RV pad to residential spec is the fastest way to a cracked, sinking slab within a few years.

Thickness by RV type

  • Travel trailer or small toy hauler: 4-inch pour, rebar 18-inch centers
  • Class C motorhome: 5-inch pour, rebar 12-inch centers
  • Class A motorhome (25,000+ lb): 6-inch pour, #4 rebar 12-inch centers
  • Diesel pusher with slide-outs: 6-inch minimum, consider 8-inch under stabilizer jack points

Base preparation

6 inches of compacted class II road base, minimum. Compacted to 95% modified proctor. On expansive soils common around Prescott Valley and Chino Valley, we sometimes recommend 8 inches with a geotextile fabric layer.

Drainage and slope

Minimum 1% slope away from the RV to prevent water pooling around tires and stabilizer feet. On sloped lots we'll form the pad with a slight crown so water sheds both sides.

Add-ons that make a pad more usable

  • 50-amp electrical hookup stubbed to the pad
  • Water hookup with a frost-proof yard hydrant
  • Sewer clean-out for portable tank dumping
  • Broom finish for slip resistance, sealed with a UV-stable product

A properly-built RV pad in Prescott runs $12–$18 per square foot depending on utilities. Skipping the utility rough-in usually costs more in the long run — trenching under a finished slab is exponentially more expensive than pouring around it the first time.
