Shingle roofing

Why shingle still wins for most homes.

Architectural asphalt shingles give you the best cost-to-lifespan ratio of any steep-slope roof in northern Arizona. A quality laminated shingle installed correctly will run 25–30 years here, handles monsoon wind well when nailed to spec, and comes in colors that suit both Prescott's pine-country homes and Prescott Valley's newer builds. The installation matters more than the brand. We nail in the manufacturer's strip (over-driven or high nails are the single most common cause of blow-off), use synthetic underlayment rated for high deck temperatures, run ice-and-water shield in valleys and around penetrations, and replace flashing rather than reusing it. We also correct attic ventilation. Under-vented attics run 150°F+ and bake shingles from below, which is why some 30-year roofs fail at 15.

Frequently asked

Common questions

How long do asphalt shingles last in northern Arizona?

Architectural shingles typically last 25–30 years here with proper attic ventilation. UV exposure at our elevation is intense, so ventilation and quality underlayment matter more than in most climates.

How much does a shingle roof cost?

Most shingle re-roofs in Prescott and Prescott Valley run about $6–$12 per square foot installed, including tear-off, underlayment, flashing, and haul-away.

Can shingles handle monsoon wind?

Yes — most architectural shingles are rated to 110–130 mph when installed to spec with the correct nailing pattern and sealed starter course.
