Northern Arizona soil is not uniform. Decomposed granite, expansive clay, and rock can all show up on the same lot, so we base excavation depth, footing width, and reinforcement on the soils report and the plan set — never on a guess. Frost depth matters here too: footings go below it so freeze-thaw doesn't lift the structure. Common questions
What is the difference between a footing and a foundation?
A footing is the widened concrete base that spreads a building's load into the soil. The foundation is the whole system that sits on those footings — stem walls, slab, and reinforcement. Every foundation includes footings, but a footing alone isn't a foundation.
What is a monolithic slab?
A monolithic slab pours the footing (thickened edge) and the floor slab in one continuous placement. It's faster and cheaper than a stem-wall foundation and works well on flat, well-drained lots. Sloped or deep-frost sites usually need a stem wall instead.
What is a post-tension slab?
A post-tension slab uses steel cables tensioned after the concrete cures, which keeps the slab in compression and resists cracking on expansive or variable soils. It's engineer-designed; we form, place, and pour to the approved tendon layout.
Do I need an engineer for a foundation?
For habitable structures and most permitted buildings in Yavapai County, yes — you'll need a stamped plan and often a soils report. We work directly from those plans and coordinate the required inspections.
Can you pour a foundation for a metal building or barndominium?
Yes. Metal building and barndominium foundations need anchor bolts set to exact template positions and a slab thickened where columns land. We set anchors from the building manufacturer's drawings so the steel goes up without field fixes.
How thick should a garage or shop slab be?
Four inches is standard for a residential garage. Shops, barns, and slabs that see trucks, lifts, or equipment should be 5–6 inches with rebar on chairs — thickness and reinforcement should match the heaviest load, not the average one.
